PROPOSAL: DIVERSITY INTERVENTION

AIMS:

  • To conduct a diversity climate survey in order to gain an understanding of diversity challenges facing team members
  • Identify areas of improvement for interaction between diverse team members and staff interactions with diverse customers
  • Custom design, deliver and evaluate an intervention aiming to understand internal diversity issues & provide team members with tools to improve relations between diverse team members and diverse customers

DATA COLLECTION TOOLS:

  • 1 day OR 2 day (*recommended) diversity awareness interventions with 20 staff
  • Organic structure using group exercises to capture diversity challenges facing team members and allowing team members to suggest possible solutions
  • Use of interactive activities such as applied theatre and West-African drumming creates a forum for open and honest communication
  • Structure and content determined by findings from climate survey

MANAGER INTERVENTION:

  • Foundational understanding of theoretical content for team intervention (as above)
  • Strategic understanding of how to harness the business benefits of diversity
  • Use of problem identification and problem-solving activities to allow managers to identify, understand and suggest solutions to diversity issues facing the unit
  • Action Planning session to generate short term on-the-job measures to address team diversity issues and long term measures to support the creation of an inclusive diversity culture
  • Identify Key Performance Indicators

NOTE: In contrast to short term measures, diversity management theory maintains that strategies aiming to create sustainable change require the alignment of HR systems such as training & development, recruitment, compensation and reward structure with a long-term diversity strategy which is closely linked to the business strategy. The creation of an inclusive organisational culture is critical to achieve this.

EVALUATION:Detailed Evaluation Feedback Report highlighting important learnings obtained through action research process & providing recommendations for management.
